Heightmap & Materials

Hi, I was looking at mapping a png of some landscape to a heightmap.  The heightmap is not square (power of 2) and it shows up fine.  However when I apply the material it complains it is not a power of 2 (which is fine).  I was assuming that if I stretch the bitmap along one of the axis to make it square I would then be able to apply it.

However something wierd happens when I do this, it does show the material as I would expect it.  Instead it sometimes rotates the image and repeats it so that it fills the terrain.  Do I need to set a parameter in order to have the material 'stretch' across the heightmap instead of repeating itself? 

The only other alternative I have is to create square heightmaps.
